COLD GIRL MAKEUP

Things that make us blush: a public faux pas, a handsome stranger staring at us from across the room, frigid temperatures, oh… and maybe a couple of martinis on a Friday night. With November kicking off, and the readoption of the Autumnal color scheme in our wardrobes, it might be time to familiarize ourselves with this modest makeup trend “fall”-ing through our feeds.

Basic Base

Nailing the “Cold Girl” look depends, primarily, on the muting of all facial color outside of the upper cheeks and nose. Of course, you can manipulate the components to suit your own aim, but a true adherent will take the day off from contour, bronzer, and most definitely the highlighter. No shine. No gloss. Just a soft matte base.

Time to get cozy with your favorite cream concealer and light-wear foundation powder as you prepare for the arrival of snowfall. Just remember to keep your foundation (if used) thin; you are a human, not a christmas cookie.

Prep for Pink

Roses are red, and today our noses are pink.

Although there is no hard and fast rule about how to achieve that flushed-out, just-got-off-the-ski-slopes aesthetic, I have found that applying a layer of cream blush first allows for a more defined glow.

Top it off by smoothing out any harsh color contrasts with your reliable blending brush, and powder compact, and there you have it; an adorable elf-ish appearance to match the chilly weather.

Tip: Focus your blush application on the bridge of your nose, and blend onto your upper cheeks from there. With blush, a little can go a long way. Depending on your face shape, one misplaced makeup deposit can send you back to square one with recreating this seasonal trend.

Bare Brow

In 2022, nothing can be more true than the love and attention we have for our brows. As we inch closer to wrapping this year up with a pretty bow, why stop the praise?

For the “Cold Girl” look, go for your tried-and-true bushy bare brow. Think Brooke Shields, or Lily Collins as you fill-in and comb for this makeup trend. Your brows will appear full and natural as they embrace their role as the fluffy sweater of this cold-weather look.

Laid-Back Lip

Keeping on-theme with the rest of the trend, go for a muted lip. A couple of dabs of dusty mauve, or toasted almond to the center of your lower lip should do the trick for adding that hint of color.

Abigail Kussow

Somewhere between driving forty-eight minutes to get to the nearest Sephora, and getting a degree in Anthropology, I found myself–-as many of us do– utterly dissatisfied with where I was headed. I would pick up extra hours at the university library because it gave me access to the latest issues Condé Nast had to offer, and I was guilty of the cardinal sin of wearing my favorite pair of sling-back mules in the laboratory. When the novelty of being in academia wore off, I clung to the joy I found in the novels of Joan Didion, and clips of fashion week that trickled down my social media feeds. Hi, I’m Abigail, and like my fellow VS authors, clean beauty and writing are part of the lifestyle. I refuse to divorce myself from monochrome minimalism and subtle plum lipstick. I’m a fervent believer that mascara should be layered on top and bottom. Shoes are just as important as your manicure, and perfume is best when it doesn’t crowd the room. I am the #caférecluse on her 2009-2012 Rachel McAdams aesthetic binge, and I wear it well.
