CHEMICAL VS. MINERAL SUNSCREEN
As I get older, I've come to realize the importance of sunscreen. I constantly hear reminders such as “wear sunscreen to prevent skin cancer" and "sunscreen helps prevent wrinkles as you age." It's clear that wearing sunscreen is crucial for skin protection. However, with so many sunscreen options available at the store, it can be overwhelming to understand the differences between them.
I decided to take matters into my own hands and research the variances in sunscreens to make it easier for you to make a choice the next time you’re in the market for one.
Mineral Sunscreen
Mineral-based sunscreen contains active ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. This type of sunscreen is safe for the skin due to the mineral ingredients, causing less irritation than chemical-based sunscreens.
Mineral sunscreen is also safer for marine and coral life. When going to the beach and planning to swim in the ocean, it's important to wear mineral-based sunscreen to prevent harm to coral reefs caused by bleaching from chemicals in other sunscreens.
Although mineral-based sunscreen has a thicker consistency, applying a generous amount is crucial for skin protection. I recommend the EltaMD UV Daily Broad Spectrum Sunscreen with SPF 40 for the face and the Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen with SPF 50 for the body. Both are free of harmful chemicals and hold great quality.
Chemical Sunscreen
Chemical-based sunscreen contains chemicals that can cause skin irritation. When sprayed, these sunscreens can release toxic chemicals into the air, which can be harmful to inhale. Additionally, these chemicals are known to be harmful to marine life and can “contribute to coral bleaching and the death of coral reefs.” Some irritating ingredients to look out for are oxybenzone, butylparaben, 4MBC and octinoxate.
The brand Vacation offers a great sunscreen spray with SPF 30, which is perfect for pool days or outdoor activities away from marine life.
That being said, keep your skin protected and be mindful of what your sunscreen ingredients will do for you and the environment.
