ATHENS TRAVEL GUIDE
For its stunning coastal views, ancient landmarks, and undeniably delicious cuisine, Greece remains at the top of many travel bucket lists. Beautiful Greek islands such as Mykonos and Santorini have been all the rage the past few summers, but the country’s capital, Athens, is well worth a visit. Here are some unmissable adventures during a vacation in Athens.
A Visit to the Acropolis
One of the first things to do upon arrival in Athens is visit the Acropolis, an ancient landmark dating all the way back to the 5th century BC. It has an incredible view from the top of a limestone hill, and the site features the Parthenon, a religious temple for the Greek Goddess Athena. The temple showcases detailed engravings and columns that still stand today.
While checking out the Acropolis, you can also go to the Acropolis Museum housing the artifacts excavated from the ancient site.
Take a Food Tour
Athens has so much amazing food to offer, so it can be hard to decide where to go and what to try first. Many paid food tours are offered in Athens, which make it easy to try a broad spectrum of Greek cuisine all at once. You can explain specific tastes and interests to your guide during the tour. Most tours cover the absolute essentials, such as souvlaki, feta and kefalotryi.
Go on a Cruise to the Saronic Islands
What’s more exciting than a daytime cruise? Within 50 miles of Athens are several beautiful small islands frequented by sailboats. The Saronic islands add undeniable magic to a trip to Greece with their own white sand beaches, delicious restaurants and ancient ruins. Cruises are offered on sailboats, catamarans and cruise ships.
Explore Delphi
Just next door to Athens, Delphi is home to some of the most famous ruins in Greece, which practically transport visitors back to ancient times. You will see the Temple of Apollo showcasing impressive architecture similar to the Parthenon. Nearby are the incredibly well-preserved ancient theatre and ancient stadium.
Athens Style
While the summers are hot, the weather stays relatively mild in Athens throughout the rest of the year. The bright blue water and white architecture calls for white and blue clothes, such as white linen pants or dresses, blue skirts and lightweight button-downs. Some accessories for the perfect look are sunglasses and dangling earrings. For colder weather, a denim or leather jacket will often do the trick!
It’s just about impossible for Greece to disappoint. Relax, dine, explore and enjoy your trip!
