THE SUNDAY ROUTINE

She steps into the shower, eucalyptus-scented steam filling her nostrils. In these dry winter months, her body has been longing for this refreshment. As she coats her strands with a moisture mask she feels the hair begin to soften in her hands. She takes this extra step in her routine as an investment in herself, an investment in how she feels. Before she turns off the stream of water, she runs it cold for a few seconds. She’d read this as a hair care tip in a teen magazine many years ago, but now it’s part of her practice. The cold water returns her wandering mind to her body and prepares her for shiver as she opens the shower door.

She envelops herself in a cream-colored towel that is fresh out of the dryer. The soft texture provides comfort and warmth. She turns toward the mirror, admiring her own features with welcoming eyes of acceptance. The lines that appear when she smiles, the freckle that resembles an 18th-century french beauty mark. These traits are pieces of the puzzle that is her life: everchanging, ever knowing, ever moving forward.

She is present, her mind is clear, she is ready for the week to follow.
