AMAL CLOONEY
When I think of the ultimate personification of intelligence, beauty, and public service, the name Amal Clooney comes to mind. Born Amal Alamuddin in Beirut, Lebanon, this human rights lawyer, and activist has recently made headlines for urging the United Nations to hold Russia accountable for their alleged war crimes against Ukraine. Since February 2022, Clooney has been a part of the international task force advising Ukraine in response to Russia’s military invasion. Her career in law spans nearly fifteen years, with clients including Nobel Prize winner Nadia Murad, Egyptian-Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy, and former prime minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko.
Clooney currently also represents Yazidi victims of genocide in a national court, over 100 Sudanese victims of crimes committed by Janjaweed leader Ali Kushayb, and is leading the international counsel team acting for Filipino Journalist and Nobel Prize winner Maria Ressa. In 2016, she co-founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice with husband, actor, and humanitarian, George Clooney to advocate for worldwide accountability for human rights abuses. “Because justice doesn’t just happen - you have to wage it; you have to bend the arc toward it,” she said about the foundation in her March 2022 interview with Time Magazine. Clooney is also a visiting faculty member and senior fellow of Columbia Law School’s Human Rights Institute.
While Clooney has made a household name for herself in international law as a London-based barrister, she is also celebrated for her iconic fashion sense and natural beauty. Favoring elegant labels such as Stella McCartney, Giambattista Valli, and Oscar de la Renta, Clooney’s style is a reflection of her confidence and poise. For her star-studded wedding in 2014, the gorgeous bride wore an Oscar de la Renta gown rumored to cost $38,000. It was later reported to be the last creation designed by Oscar de la Renta before his death later that year. “It is the most important dress in the life of a woman,” he told Vogue. “Any girl from any walk of life dreams of that special dress, and I try to make that dream a reality for her.” Her bridal makeup, featuring mauve, berry-toned lips, and dreamy eyes by her go-to makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, finished the look.
Clooney’s polished stunning sense of style, natural beauty, and work has landed her on magazine covers from Vogue’s May 2018 issue (which I keep on my desk for inspiration) to being featured recently on the cover as one of Time’s “12 Leaders Working Toward a More Equal World'' Issue in April 2022. “To young women, I would say: Reach for the stars and believe in yourselves, and know that the only thing you can regret is not trying,” Clooney said at the end of her Time Magazine interview. “Even if you don’t know if you can do it. Even if you’ve never done it before. Even if you don’t know anyone who’s done it. Just shifting your thinking away from ‘Why me?’ and instead to ‘Why not me?’”
