SUMMER FABRICS

As the season changes and the weather gets warmer, the struggle to find clothing that will keep you cool becomes more prominent than ever. The wrong fabrics can wreak havoc on our garments and how comfortable we feel in the summer heat and humidity. The key to keeping cool in the summer lies within the fabric composition of your garment. When picking out your outfit, make sure to incorporate these fabrics that are the best to wear this summer to continue looking effortlessly fashion-forward while keeping cool.

Cotton

Cotton is one of the most used fabrics in the world. This natural fiber is soft, lightweight, and breathable, allowing air to circulate through it easily. Cotton is also absorbent, so it will soak up moisture and allow you to cool down fairly quickly. Since cotton can come in many different forms, look for lighter weaves and fabrics with a higher concentration of cotton if it is a blend such as cotton-polyester.

Linen

Linen is the most popular summer fabric for a reason. Since linen is a loosely woven natural fiber, it allows warm air to escape from the body. In addition to being extremely breathable, it is also absorbent and dries quickly which is essential for humid summer days.



Chambray

Often described as imitation denim, chambray has all of the same benefits as denim but is a lot lighter in weight due to its weave. In addition to being much lighter than denim, chambray also commonly comes in a higher thread count, therefore making it much more breathable than your typical pair of jeans.

Silk

Silk is the perfect fabric for the days when you are indoors and will only be outside for short amounts of time. Silk is naturally soft and extremely lightweight making it the perfect elegant fabric for summer. Compared to faux silk made of polyester, its weightless nature band the tendency adjusts to your body temperature and is a little more breathable. It is important however to remember that silk is not very absorbent so it is not ideal for humid days as it can ruin the garment. When looking for silk pieces, look for looser fits as they will be more breathable and will also be less likely to come in contact with moisture from your body.

Poplin

Poplin is constructed of thin vertical yarns that are plainly woven with thicker horizontal yarns, usually in lightweight cotton. Similar to linen poplin is very breathable and lightweight making it a great fabric to keep you cool in the summer, but is wrinkle-resistant, unlike linen.

Seersucker

Seersucker is a thin, lightly puckered fabric that is a member of the cotton family. Its distinctive texture and lightweight composition allow air to circulate freely from the body making it a highly breathable fabric. In addition to it being great for the summer, it is also easy to care for and very durable.


While it is impossible to fully escape from the heat, you can definitely hack the way your dress for it by focusing on wearing lightweight and breathable fabrics.
