SERENADE ME, SANTE FE
When a friend suggests taking a spontaneous trip across the Southwest in order to save a goldendoodle and a beloved vehicle from a four + hour flight, you go for it. After all, what are friends for?
When I was met with this proposition, I thought that a change of scenery might be a nice way to catch some much needed R&R. In addition, I would have the chance to scope out the local art scenes of which I am always squeezing into on the eastern coast.
Then came Sante Fe, New Mexico a.k.a. my little slice of paradise.
From the pueblo-style architecture, to the jazz-infused underground lounges, here is everything you need to know before packing your carry-ons for “The City Different” in the Land of Enchantment.
Now in Living Color
It is impossible to visit Sante Fe without stumbling into an art gallery. There’s the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, Palace of the Governors, and the Museum of National Folk Art (just to name a few). With an extensive list of artifacts, exhibits, and in-house events, you are sure to be awed and amazed.
Spanish 101
For those of you who dabbled in Spanish during your years of schooling, you are in luck. Sante Fe was originally a Spanish settlement, and is now home to a rich marriage of Spanish-Anglo and Pueblo culture. You’ll fall in love with the adobe buildings, chile ristras hanging from every nook and cranny, and–of course–the cuisine.
If you have a free night, be sure to check out the El Farol for margaritas, tapas, and flamenco dancing.
House of the Dragon
If you want to rekindle your relationship with horticulture, add The Dragon Room to your schedule. It’s a cozy evening bar that is practically begging to be put on your instagram page.
Declared by locals as the best bar in Sante Fe, the stained glass and lantern lighting blend nicely with the greenery growing across, through, and up the walls. It’s also a great place to meet and mingle with new-found friends over a cocktail.
Don’t be nervous to take that convo to the patio and enjoy looking up at the stars while you sway to the tunes.
Holy Faith
Apart from museum art, Sante Fe hosts gorgeous structures that conjure up their own historic beauty. Take The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assis with its accompanying fountain and gated gardens, or the blushing pink Scottish Rite Masonic Temple. The Loretto Chapel, too, is a must-see with its infamous spiral staircase.
Shop Til’ You Drop
Is there really any exercise that beats shopping? Spend the day walking in The Sante Fe Plaza, and you’ll be able to do just that. Vendors line the city-center sidewalks, and artists sell their latest works as locals and tourists alike enjoy the scenery.
The Look
Barring snow pants and ski goggles, there really is no way to flunk the Sante Fe Vacay outfit test. Due to the warmer temperatures, I chose to keep things relaxed and loose with flowy skirts and halter-neck dresses.
With the amount of walking you’ll be doing, I advise sticking closer to the lighter side of the color wheel; creams, beiges, and baby blues will keep you nice and cool while you wait for the sun to set.
Add a pop of color to become a part of the art culture yourself with eye-catching bracelet sets, and slip into a comfy pair of sandals to complete your bohemian vibe.
