HAIR OILING

Why You Should Incorporate Hair Oiling into Your Weekly Routine

Hair care can be a tricky thing to master as there are so many products, treatments, and services that are on today’s market. While all of these can be great, they can start to add up and make your pockets hurt (I’m looking at you, Olaplex!). Sometimes, the simplest methods are cheaper and more effective than the pricier options. Hair oiling has been a part of my weekly routine for years, and it comes along with amazing benefits. While it may be a “trend” now, hair oiling has been passed down through generations of many South Asian and African cultures and is of great importance to their heritages and beauty routines. Here are some tips to help get you started:

Not All Oils Are Created Equal

Depending on your hair goals, there is a type of oil that is best suited for your needs. If you are looking for growth, rosemary or peppermint oil stimulates blood flow to the scalp, speeding up hair growth. Grapeseed, almond, and argan oil are great options for thirsty strands that need some extra hydration. Castor oil is thicker in consistency (and is usually mixed with another oil because of this) but is great for growth, moisturization, and dandruff (it happens to the best of us!). If your hair is lacking, coconut oil has been used in many Indian and Asian ways to add incredible shine. Of course, there are so many more oils to choose from, and you should always do your own research to see what works best for your individual hair type, as some oils may not work for you.

How Long? How Much?

Again, this is something that is totally subjective to your hair type and hair goals! As someone with straight hair, I tend to leave my hair oiling routine to days when I know I have the whole day to myself because my hair is a little too greasy for my liking to go out. If your hair type does not show the oil as much or you don’t mind a slick look, you can totally get away with going about your day with your treatment in (I’m looking at you, sleek bun)! For all-over treatments where you really saturate the hair from root to tip, a good range of leave-in time is six to eight hours. If you are someone who suffers from scalp issues and loves a good scalp serum or oil, you should be good to apply a small amount to your roots after wash day.

It may take some practice to get your oiling routine down– and some trial-and-error to find your favorite oils– but the results will definitely have you hooked! Your hair– and your wallet– will thank you.
