THE VAMP LOOK
As someone who went through her awkward teens during the Tumblr era, a.k.a the glory years for all things romanticus gothicus, and now champions the powers of the clean girl aesthetic (long may she reign), the thought of donning a matte smokey eye with a bold burgundy lip makes me a bit nervous. However, after diving into the archives, and checking the latest via the fashion gods of this season, I am confident that we can revamp the trappings of the “vampy girl” trend to suit our current Fall ‘22 needs.
The Lip
It pretty much goes without saying: the lips are essential to becoming Miss Glam Vampira.
Be it blood red, midnight blue, or potion purple. Mastering the lips of a sultry siren comes, primarily, from the depth of the color. Take a page from Rodarte’s Fall 2020 runway show hosted in St. Bart’s in Midtown Manhattan. Coined “delicate vampire” by Vogue’s Beauty Director, Celia Ellenberg, each model was equipped with her own sickly shade of dark.
The Eyes
Smoke those lids out, ladies. Life is too short to be half-rocking a Fall fashion favorite. For a fresh take on a recurring classic make-up look, swap out your black shadow for a smudged coffee brown, or maroon. Start by tightlining a smidge above the waterline, and gradually blend upwards. Leave the creasing-at-the-lid technique back in 2016, and allow some longevity to the femme fatale aesthetic pre- and post- your Halloween mixer.
For some inspiration, check out Hailey Bieber’s rendition of her brown fade posted earlier this month to IG.
For increased drama, check out the shadow action renowned makeup artist, Dick Page gave to the eyes of Michael Kors models working the NYFW Fall/Winter 22.23 collection.
The Face
For this autumnal season, I’m going to throw a curveball. Let’s lean into the dewy look. Alright, perhaps not that much of a shocking statement for the Jello-trending skin craze of today, but definitely a sidestep from the typical vamp look. With the colder temperatures and lack of humidity in the air, your skin is gonna love the moisture it receives, so here is some beauty guru advice: leave your base hydrated and tone minimalistic. Drop the heavy matte foundation, and embrace the natural awesomeness of fresh skin.
If desired: add a few dots of contour below your cheekbones, forehead, and bridge of nose.
