THE TRAP OF TIMELESSNESS

I can not open Tik Tok without seeing videos of women and men building their “capsule wardrobes” filled with “timeless” pieces they will wear forever. I call BS.

Typically, the wardrobe consists of white and black tops, bodysuits, blue jeans, and an oversized blazer or trench coat. Although many items are arguably timeless, such as the plain white and black tee, many styles are just trendy. Influencers and companies are now using this idea of these everlasting pieces as just another way to get them to buy more clothes. Below, we will compare the styles that aren’t timeless, and replace them with those that are! Let’s see some examples below:

The Baggy Jean

Imagine you are in your mid-40s, getting ready for a day of work, and you look into your capsule closet for a nice pair of jeans to wear with your top. You will not wear your low-rise oversized jeans that show your belly button and hang below your shoes. **Yet, the baggy jean is one of the top closet essentials in any influencer’s capsule wardrobe. While the pieces are typically Levis, staple jean that lasts forever, the baggy jean is purely a style that will become cringey in several months due to the epidemic called fast fashion. Instead, a pair of straight jeans will always be uncontroversial and perfect for many occasions: work, going out, dates, your typical everyday! Levi’s jeans will always be reliable, so if you want something immortal, this affordable brand is the one for you.

Blazers

Whether you are a professional woman in the workforce or someone who loves oversized coats, the oversized blazer is trendy. Many see this item as a staple piece because it is a “professional” type of clothing. Just because an item is appropriate for work doesn’t mean it will be in style forever. Rather than getting super oversized blazers with large shoulder pads, opt for something flattering and fitting. Flattering will always be in style!

Coats

Lastly, coats and jackets are arguably the most and least interchangeable pieces in your wardrobe, depending on where you reside. Those in Arizona have one for ten years, while those in Minnesota buy twenty yearly! Fur has made a recent comeback, especially ones with a shearling neckline and cuffs. While they are neutral pieces and can be dressed up for the workplace, they are merely a trend that will pass and go. Like I said before, just because it’s professional does not mean it’s timeless. Rather, I recommend super simple and versatile coats that go with everything at any time!

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, this is all subjective. If you want to wear oversized jeans that hang low for fifty years, do it! However, I encourage you to be extremely careful when watching fashion content. Every day, you are being influenced in one million ways, and it is so easy to get sucked into the rapid trend cycles and spend thousands on dollars on clothes you will not wear a year from now. Trust your personal style, and don’t be scared to think for yourself and be “untrendy”!
