THE CORSET TOP

We all love a period drama, and it’s the perfect time to throw on iconic era-inspired fashion riding on the coattails of “Bridgerton’s” newly released third season. We may not wear the satin gown or a petticoat, but we can tie modern and classic together with the corset top, a stunning reinterpretation of Victorian and Georgian clothing.

Although we may be curious or downright confused about the connection between “Bridgerton” and corsets since the show’s fashion depicts the Regency’s softer fabrics and empire-waist dresses, there is one royal who wears the garment in every scene. We’re in luck with that historical nod (if only as an excuse to wear gorgeous tops and blame it on our favorite shows).

The corset top branches off from the original corset, which means that the top mimics the style of a corset without the heavy breathing and rib pain. Typically, the corset details are purely decorative. If the corset top ties at all, it doesn’t suck our stomachs in to the extent of 18th and 19th century corsets.

In other words, it’s the perfect top for any occasion over the upcoming sophisticated summer. Here are some ways to wear our new favorite fashion item.

Jeans

If we want to dress the corset top down for a brunch with friends or a walk around the city, pair it with jeans. This classy combination lets us lean into quiet luxury while staying true to our personal comfort, but don’t be afraid to play around with distinctive jean colors. Add a pair of heels to create a flawless look.

Slacks or Trousers

If we’re looking for business flair, slacks will do the trick. For this look, it’s best when the corset top does not have unnecessary embellishments on it. Keep it simple by focusing on the corset boning and the clean lines.

However, we love some extra detailing dripping off the corset if we’re matching business with fun. This is ideal for dinners in summer getaways and workplaces that appreciate some creative license in the “business casual” category.

Skirts

On the other hand, if we want to dress up for a formal event or feel like a princess locked in a tower (we’re fine with either aesthetic), a corset top and skirt pairing is immaculate. A skirt transforms the corset top by reminiscing about the garment that showed up in the fashion world centuries ago. Fortunately, it’s completely appropriate for summer, which is when we’re looking for breathable fabrics and flowy silhouettes.

The corset top is our favorite trend, and it’s clear that its versatility and sustainability will keep it trending throughout the year. There are so many opportunities to wear this fashionable attire, so get a corset top that you won’t throw out until it’s falling apart.
