CALM MIND

"Breathe in. Breathe out.”- the words we often hear when being advised to stay calm, but may find trouble adhering to.

The wandering mind can easily be a best friend to us on some days, or our worst enemy on others, yet a clear headspace isn’t as unattainable as it may seem— simply eased through the practice of yoga.

The ancient practice is key to naturally soothing inevitable feelings of anxiety that can invade our minds at any given time or place. Despite the unknowing of what each day will bring, beginning your morning with a simple, yet consistent routine helps to clarify the mind, relax the body, and ease the soul and senses like no other.

SIGHT

Look around you. Recognize those places that make you feel the most content; most free to move at your own pace, then start your yoga journey there. Anxious feelings will lesson when in a familiar, comfortable location.

Will it be indoors, in the comfort of your home? Or maybe outside on the fresh green grass? By the ocean if weather permits? You decide. The set-up varies for each person, so adjust to your personal needs. Yoga is on your time and should never be rushed, focusing solely on the present moment.

SOUND

The mind-body practice can be completed in silence or to music if desired. Sessions can include a combination of peaceful, instrumental music, reflecting sounds of nature and tranquility.

If you are new to the world of yoga, consider following along with the voice of an experienced instructor. They will often reiterate the importance of breathing, as a necessity to balancing out anxious thoughts. Take deep, steady breaths to slow down and cancel out an increased heart rate that comes with anxiety. Your heart will thank you.

SMELL

Yoga is a gift to heal your body, so make your session special. Light a sandalwood scented candle, or perhaps burn incense to fully immerse yourself in the experience. In addition, diffusing essential oils will decrease feelings of anxiety. Scents such as jasmine rose, lavender or bergamot work best to travel through the brain and regulate the nervous system, leading to a calmer mental space.

TASTE

Unlike other exercises, yoga requires hydration, just not during practice. The body receives multiple benefits from yoga which aren’t as effective as excessive water consumption, so instead sip some freshwater before, then continue hydrating after.

Prior to your routine, eat a small, balanced meal containing simple carbs, high-fiber fruits, or a little protein to provide energy and fuel the body.

TOUCH

Yoga is incomplete without a yoga mat, so choose wisely, allowing your body to comfortably sink into the mat without any muscle pain. There are many levels to the practice of yoga, so never challenge your body to more than it can handle, especially when combating anxiety.

Our thoughts may try to consume us but won’t prevail when the mind is clear and cleansed. So find a safe space, relax your muscles, and unite the body and mind as one.
