PLATINUM HAIR

Platinum Hair is Hot RN: Here’s All You Need To Know

Platinum hair is resurfacing as a huge trend this season. Kim Kardashian has had platinum tresses the past few months, but she is not the only one who made the jump into the bleach bowl: other celebrities like Anya Taylor Joy, Lorde, Dua Lipa, and more have been absolutely rocking this bold, eye-catching style.

My hair is naturally a medium brown, but I have always wanted to go platinum. I had started going through the process of going blonde since the beginning of the year, and nine months later, I felt ready to finally go platinum.

While I made sure to slowly increase my blonde-ness each session, I was still wondering if we would be able to get me to the level that I wanted. She started by applying the bleach to the roots of my hair first, then carried it down through the ends. Thankfully, she used Olaplex throughout my entire appointment that day, which protected my hair as much as possible despite the super strong bleach.

I was expecting some damage, hair loss, and breakage, but I think I was a little taken aback when my appointment came to a close. There was A LOT of breakage, and my hair felt gummy and stretchy. I began to panic because I have always had very thick hair. To see chunks of it come out as I brushed was terrifying!

Even though my hair is pretty spoiled already, I knew that I would have to baby it even more. I immediately ran out to purchase K-18, which is a treatment to repair broken bonds in the hair. Besides hearing that it’s pricey, I also heard that it works faster and better than Olaplex. I needed all the extra help I could get– and fast!

I started with my usual hair care routine. The first time I washed my hair at home, I used an oil treatment as a pre-wash. This is something that I have always done, and I think it really moisturizes my hair before using shampoo, which can be drying. In the shower I used Olaplex shampoo, making sure to be gentle as I scrubbed my scalp. Getting out of the shower, I wrapped my hair in a microfiber towel, then proceeded to apply K-18 as directed. I was nervous about not using conditioner– especially because my hair was so damaged– but the K-18 made my hair very easy to brush through with my wet brush. As far as if it works in four minutes, I think that it absolutely does what it says. My hair looked less frizzy and felt stronger and softer. This put my mind at ease because I know as I use it, my hair will get better and better. I followed the K-18 with my usual leave-in conditioner and hair oil after letting it “set” for four minutes. With all of the extra love, I feel confident that my hair will be repaired in no time.

Going forward, I am making sure to use heat sparingly and being as nice as I can to my newly-bleached locks. Intermittently, I will work in a deep conditioning mask, K-18 and Olaplex, and of course purple shampoo and conditioner every now and then to keep away brassy and yellow tones.

Going platinum can be intimidating, but I am so happy I finally did it. I’m excited to style my new icy hair moving into the colder months.
