EFFORTLESS CHIC
Who has ever opened the closet and felt lost with their own clothes and style? I sure did, more than once. In an era where trends change every day and fashion is always reinventing itself, sometimes it's a bit overwhelming to always be in fashion. I know that sometimes when we open our closets, we have so many options from past collections that we are in doubt if the pieces we have are trending or not.
However, a timeless style that never goes out of fashion is elegant/chic. Yet for those who still don't adhere to this style and want to start investing in timeless pieces, the tip is to start with a "capsule wardrobe.” This concept that gained my heart emerged in the 1970s when stylist Susie Faux created the idea of a closet composed of a few essential, timeless items combined. Where less is more. More recently the capsule wardrobe has been trending, as influencers are beginning to embrace it as a lifestyle or even a challenge.
But now the big question is... how to create a capsule wardrobe? I was also lost when I decided to start my own. The key tip to know is that you must choose a limited amount of pieces when assembling. To make this selection, you'll need to exercise detachment by analyzing your closet. You know that piece you loved a few years ago that was super on-trend, but don't wear anymore? Or that beautiful dress that you've never worn because you're waiting for the perfect moment? Leave them out. The idea is to start with pieces in neutral tones (black, white, dark blue, brown), and then when you get used to matching all your clothes, you can start adding colors.
The five main pieces of your closet should be a black blazer (with a straight cut and wide buttons), a white T-shirt, dark tone jeans (for example, a model that does not go out of style is skinny), a white shirt with long sleeves and tailored pants (mid-size models tend to be less elegant than longer ones). Once you obtain these five pieces, millions of outfit ideas will pop into your mind. Just wait, you will see.
Moving on to bags, notice that a few years ago large bags were all the rage, but now mini bags are on-trend. To make sure you don't go wrong when investing in a classic bag to fit in with your timeless pieces, invest in a medium-sized bag and you'll always be on the rise. One of my favorites, for example, is the Kelly 32. Following the color pattern of the clothes, stick with neutral tones, then gradually add the colors. I have to admit that shopping bags are my passion. When we find the one that fits our personality, it’s magical.
The ideal for the capsule wardrobe is to have around 30 pieces. I had to let go of some pieces that I loved to get to this number, but as I cleared my closet I realized that the occasions I wore them were rare. Don't forget that the main purpose of this closet style is to have clothes that match each other and follow an elegant style. With this mindset, you will also learn to invest more in your clothes and think about quality over quantity. So, are you ready to stay always in fashion?
